Best Albums of 2009: Compilations

5 YEARS OF HYPERDUB

Buy Burial - 5: Five Years of Hyperdub

Buy Amazon5 Years of Hyperdub

A phenomenal compilation of 5 years of the influential Hyperdub label based in London and the leading light of the dubstep genre which combines grime, dub reggae, garage & drum n’ bass. Disc 1 is made up of all new tracks and Disc 2 serves as a “greatest hits” for the label. My experience of this genre outside of this comp is very limited but from research and listening I can say that it’s an excellent entry into dubstep for all who are interested. I urge any fan of trip-hop, dub, drum n’ bass or acid jazz to check it out.

 DARK WAS THE NIGHT

Buy Kronos Quartet - Dark Was the Night

Buy AmazonDark Was the Night

This is the 20th and latest compilation from the Red Hot AIDS charity organization and plays as a veritable who’s who of modern indie-rock.. The double disc release focuses extensively on indie-rock and leans heavily on the mellower, folky & more serious-minded of today’s indie musicians. Though the tempo of both disc stays a bit too even keel throughout both disc are chock-full of great music and some interesting duets including David Byrne with The Dirty Projectors, Feist with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, and Jose Gonzalez with The Books.
